Background & Ancestry

• Born in Libau, Latvia, on November 9th, 1886.
• Arrived in the US in 1926. On March 2nd 1932 became an US citizen; received final papers in Chicago, Illinois.
• Son of Bernard Michelson and Betty Frank both born in Latvia. Father was civil servant and mother was a housewife.
• First marriage to Pauline Ivienski, divorced in 1910. Remarried on October 15th 1925 in Mexico City to Dora Neveloff Boder of New York.
• One child was the result of either the previous or second marriage.
• Died in Los Angeles, California, on December 18th, 1961.

Education

• In 1901 attended Experimental High School of Teachers’ College in Vilna, Lithuania. Earned a certificate in 1903.
• Attended Teachers’ College in Vilna, Lithuania, 1903-1905.
• From 1905-1906 attended the University of Leipzig, Germany and earned a State Teaching Certificate in General Psychology in 1909. During this experience, studied with Wilhelm Wundt and then with Vladimir Bekhterev.
• Boder graduated from the Psycho-Neurological Institute at St. Petersburg, Russia in 1912, studied Psychology, Philosophy, and Biology.
• Earned an M.A. degree in Psychology in 1927 from the University of Chicago, Illinois.
• From 1932-1934 Studied at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. Earned a Ph.D. in 1934.

Work History

• Taught German Language and Literature at Gymnasium, Stolpsoff and Dimitrieff, 1909-1915.
• Personnel Officer, rank of captain with the 15th Engineering Battalion Imperial Army, 1915-1917.
• Director of Adult Education and Extension Education with Western Section of Trans-Siberian Railroad, 1917-1918.
• Self employed; incidental tutoring, lecturing, and translation work, 1918-1920.
• Professor of German Literature (1 year). Subsequently, Professor of Psychology at the National University of Mexico, 1921-1925.
• Worked as the Director of the Department of Psycho-technique in the Federal Prison System for the Government of Federal District of Mexico, Director of short Psychological Research projects at the Agricultural College, College of Forestry, and Military College,1923-1925.
• Studied and researched psychology at the University of Chicago, 1926-?.
• Staff Psychologist, Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago,1927-33. Research Psychologist at the Institute for Juvenile Research from March to October 1927.
• Instructor, since 1930; Professor Emeritus and Head of Department of Psychology and Philosophy, Lewis Institute that became Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, 1927-1952.
• Trustee and Executive Director of the Psychology Museum, Chicago, 1937-1957.
• Psychological Consultant with the war training program of Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, during the war period.
• During the Summer of 1946 collection of verbatim wire recorded interviews with displaced persons in camps of France, Switzerland, Italy, and Germany. He continued his oral history work with interviews of survivors of the Kansas City flood of 1951.
• Director of Psychology and Research, Department of Mental Hygiene, Chicago Board of Health, and participated in organization of Mental Hygiene Clinic in Ida B. Wells Public Housing Project, May to October, 1952.
